REALITI

assistive device for safer and easier tracheal intubations

Disrupting Airway Management with the first assistive device.

Tracheal intubation is the medical process in which the clinician inserts an elastic tube into the patient’s windpipe to ensure the lungs’ ventilation. It may seem like an easy procedure, but nature designed our windpipe so that no solid body can enter our respiratory system. If the intubation takes too long leads to asphyxiation and even result in brain damage or death.

Successful intubation requires three key elements:

1. Visual Access

To see the target, the tracheal entrance.

2. Precision

The ability to maneuver the tube to desired spot

3. Experience

To perform the right moves in the right situation

REALITI combines all three key elements in one single device, providing the maximum support in this skill based task. It is designed to stay as simple as possible to handle.

Its high definition camera visualizes the glottis. The patented bending section can maneuver with robotic precision. But REALITIs USP is the intelligently automated system, which uses computer vision to detect and deflect its tip towards the windpipe.

All those points combined make the intubation easier and, hence, safer.

Visualisation of the key elements on the REALITI concept

The following clip shows our current prototype’s features and an intubation on a manikin in the USZ simulation lab. It is essential to mention that this prototype still requires a laptop, but we will develop it towards a handheld device.
